The Lime Trees of Trška Gora

The Lime Trees of Trška Gora are a living monument of nature and history. Most of them are believed to have been planted in 1622 during the construction of the Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary, with the thickest one possibly predating even that. With a trunk circumference of 810 cm, it is known as the thickest linden tree in the Dolenjska region and ranks among the 15 thickest linden trees in Slovenia. Its hollow trunk is spacious enough to shelter ten adults.

For centuries, our ancestors gathered beneath the mighty canopy of these trees—to talk, settle disputes, and share wisdom. The stone ring around the thickest linden’s trunk and the preserved stone table still stand as a testament to the importance of these trees in the social life of the past.

Due to their age and uniqueness, the Trška Gora lindens are fragile. Since 1992, they have been protected as a natural monument, and entering the hollow of the thickest linden is prohibited, as it could endanger its growth and stability.
