Lojze Slak Monument

Lojze Slak (July 23, 1932 – September 29, 2011) is one of Slovenia’s most beloved musicians and a master of the diatonic accordion. A true icon of Slovenian folk music, he left a lasting mark as the founder and long-time leader of the Lojze Slak Ensemble, creating countless timeless hits that have become part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Lojze Slak and Trška Gora

Lojze Slak had a deep personal connection with Trška Gora, where he owned a vineyard and a vineyard cottage (zidanica). It was here that he produced his own Cviček wine and found peace and inspiration. Speaking about his bond with the place, he once said: “After long tours, exhausting performances, endless meetings, and all the small and large absurdities of the world, Trška Gora always feels like a balm for my soul and body.” Trška Gora was his second home—his quiet retreat and a source of inspiration that flowed into his music.

A Monument as a Symbol of Tribute

In 2012, the Trška Gora Winegrowers’ Association erected a monument in Slak’s honour near the Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary, at the top of the hill. Designed by architect Igor Merlin, the sculpture beautifully captures the essence of Slak’s musical and winemaking legacy. The monument features red elements symbolizing Cviček, and its structure echoes the form of a diatonic accordion—an inseparable part of Slak’s musical journey.

Following Slak’s Trail

Beyond the monument, Slak’s memory is kept alive through the annual “Along Slak’s Trail” memorial hike, organized by the Winegrowers’ Association since the monument was unveiled. This 8-kilometer circular trail passes by Slak’s vineyard cottage and leads to the monument itself. The hike is a meaningful opportunity for lovers of music, wine, and nature to honour Slak’s life and work—while enjoying the scenic beauty of Trška Gora.
