Slak’s Vineyard Cottage

Lojze Slak (July 23, 1932 – September 29, 2011), one of Slovenia’s most beloved musicians and a virtuoso of the diatonic accordion, left a lasting mark on Slovenian folk music. As the founder and longtime leader of the Lojze Slak Ensemble, he created numerous timeless hits that have become part of the nation’s musical heritage.

Slak had a special bond with Trška Gora, where he owned a vineyard and a cottage where he produced cviček wine and found peace. Trška Gora was his second home—a place of inspiration and tranquility that deeply influenced his music. He once said of his love for the place:

“After long tours, exhausting performances, endless meetings, and all the little and big absurdities of the world, Trška Gora always feels like a balm for the soul and body.”

The Vineyard Cottage – A Place of Creativity and Lasting Memories

This cottage was more than just a retreat—it was a symbol of Slak’s devotion to Dolenjska traditions, music, and winemaking. Trška Gora served as his creative haven, inspiring songs that became an essential part of Slovenian folk music. In 2010, his ensemble Fantje s Praprotna filmed their final music video here—for the song Veseli kletar (The Joyful Cellarman). Both the song and its video, captured at this idyllic site, remain a celebration of Slak’s love for life, music, and wine.

In 2012, the Trška Gora Winegrowers’ Association erected a monument to Slak near the Church of the Nativity of Mary. His legacy also lives on through the annual Po Slakovi poti (On Slak’s Trail) hike, organized by the association every year since the monument was unveiled.
