Kozina's Vineyard Cottage
Kozina’s vineyard cottage is not only an architectural landmark but also a symbol of heritage that brings together music, literature, and the traditions of the Dolenjska region. This three-storey building, partly made of stone and partly of wood, was built in the early 19th century and is one of the few remaining vineyard cottages once owned by the wealthier families of the area. Its history is closely tied to the life and work of one of Slovenia’s greatest composers, Marjan Kozina, who is believed to have composed some of his masterpieces right here. The interior of the cottage once featured a piano, which is now preserved in the Museum of Dolenjska.
Marjan Kozina – A Musical Giant of the Slovenian Nation
Marjan Kozina, born on June 3, 1907, in Novo Mesto, was a composer, writer, and translator who left a lasting mark on Slovenian cultural life. As the first director of the Slovenian Philharmonic in Ljubljana, he laid the foundations of the country’s musical scene. His legacy includes compositions for the first Slovenian sound film On Our Own Land, a Symphony in Four Movements, and the widely beloved Kekec’s Song, which is believed to have been created in the vineyard cottage on Trška Gora. This cottage held a special place in Kozina’s heart. In his book Joyful Travelogues, he wrote: “The most beautiful hill in Slovenia is Trška Gora. Let everything stay just as it is, and there’s no doubt: Trška Gora is the most beautiful!” His deep love for his homeland and its natural beauty was clearly reflected in his work.
Cultural Heritage and Revitalization
In 1992, the vineyard cottage was declared a historical monument of local importance. However, despite this recognition, it began to deteriorate after the composer’s death. Today, efforts are focused on the restoration and revitalization of the cottage. Once renovated, it will serve as a ceremonial venue and a lasting tribute to Marjan Kozina. The cottage is set to become a space for cultural events, offering visitors a deeper connection to Kozina’s legacy and the significance of Trška Gora.
