Otočec Castle

Otočec Castle, a cultural monument of national importance, is considered one of the most picturesque and romantic castles in Slovenia. It is situated on a small island in the middle of the Krka River and attracts many visitors with its unique location and rich history.

A History Full of Twists and Turns

First mentioned in the 13th century, Otočec Castle was home to the vassals of the Freising bishops, known as the Knights of Otoč. Over the centuries, ownership of the castle passed through numerous noble families until 1854, when it came into the hands of the Margheri de Commandona family. This influential family managed the castle until the end of World War II, when it was occupied by Italian forces and then burned down by partisans in 1942. The rich family archives of the Margheri de Commandona, which could have revealed many details about the castle’s history, were lost in the fire. After the war, the castle lay in ruins for a long time but today shines again in all its beauty.

The Legend of the Castle’s Origin

One of the most fascinating stories about Otočec Castle says it was originally built by the water on the right bank of the Krka River. For strategic reasons, one of the lords ordered the soil around the castle to be excavated so that the river would completely surround it. This made it safer from enemies and gave it the fairy-tale appearance it still holds today.

Renaissance Through Luxury

After renovation, Otočec Castle was reborn as a prestigious five-star hotel. With its blend of Renaissance and Gothic styles, it preserves its historic character while offering the comfort and luxury of modern times. Guests can enjoy a unique combination of historic atmosphere and contemporary boutique elegance.

The Castle Park

The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park, where visitors can stroll along manicured paths past centuries-old trees and perhaps encounter a family of swans peacefully swimming in the Krka River.
