Hike Along the Slak Trail
The Hike along the Slak Trail is a traditional event organized since 2012 by the Trška Gora Winegrowers’ Association in memory of Lojze Slak – the legendary folk musician and virtuoso of the diatonic accordion. Slak found both inspiration and solace on Trška Gora, and the trail honors his deep connection to the area. Every May, the event attracts hikers from all over Slovenia who gather to celebrate his legacy by walking the 7.8-kilometer circular trail, which—with just over 200 meters of elevation gain—is suitable for a wide range of visitors.
Trail Overview
The hike begins at the Grm Novo mesto Estate – Centre for Biotechnology and Tourism, where young people learn about winemaking traditions and sustainable farming. The trail then passes Teropšič Vineyard Cottage, where hikers are welcomed by hospitable Dolenjska winemakers offering tastings of local wines and homemade snacks.
Soon after, hikers reach the summit of Trška Gora, home to one of the trail’s main highlights: the 17th-century pilgrimage Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary. Next to the church stand the majestic Trška Gora Linden Trees, over 400 years old and protected as a natural and cultural monument.
In front of the church, a memorial commemorates the National Liberation War, marking the site of a major partisan rally held on March 19, 1942. Nearby is a monument to Lojze Slak himself, a tribute to the master of the accordion who left a lasting mark on Slovenian musical culture. He pioneered a new musical style using the traditional “frajtonarica” (diatonic accordion), which he enhanced with a sixth bass and an extra “Slak button.” Not far from the monument stands Slak’s Vineyard Cottage, where he often retreated to compose music. As Slak once said:
“After long tours, exhausting performances, endless meetings, and all the small and big absurdities of the world, Trška Gora always acts as a balm for my soul and body.”
On the way down, the trail passes Verček Vineyard Cottage, where hikers can enjoy stunning views and homemade treats while learning about the pušelšank tradition. The next stop is the School Vineyard Cottage, showcasing the work and achievements of young winemakers. The recently renovated Krka Vineyard Estate is a site of cultural and historical significance.
The trail continues past Kozina’s Vineyard Cottage, named after composer Marjan Kozina, who also sought inspiration in Trška Gora’s scenic landscapes. The hike concludes at the Colnar Wine Cellar, where visitors can enjoy high-quality tastings. The winery is known for its selection of wines produced with great respect for nature and tradition.
