St. Martin's Day at Trška Gora
St. Martin’s Day is a traditional Slovenian holiday dedicated to new wine, celebrated on November 11th, the feast day of St. Martin of Tours. This day marks the transformation of must into wine, an important event in wine-growing regions.
At Trška Gora, it takes place in many wine cellars where visitors can enjoy homemade delicacies, cviček wine, and accordion music, contributing to an authentic experience of Dolenjska culture. Traditional dishes are also typical, such as roasted goose or duck with mlinci (flatbread) and red cabbage, which accompany the celebration. These dishes have symbolic meaning; for example, goose appears on the plate because of an ancient legend that the geese betrayed St. Martin when he was hiding to avoid becoming a bishop.
Local winemakers and associations, such as the Trška Gora Winemakers’ Association, organize various events, including wine tastings, presentations of local culinary specialties, and cultural programs. St. Martin’s Day at Trška Gora is thus an opportunity for visitors to learn about local tradition, enjoy excellent wines and cuisine, and experience the unique atmosphere of the Dolenjska wine region.
