About Novo mesto

The Municipality of Novo mesto lies in the heart of the Dolenjska region and combines rich history, cultural heritage, and dynamic development. Dolenjska has been inhabited for over two thousand years, and its hills and river valleys have witnessed the flourishing of various cultures. The official history of Novo mesto dates back to 1365, when Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg founded the town on a bend of the Krka River. Today, it is the central urban hub of southeastern Slovenia.

With over 38,000 inhabitants, Novo mesto is the sixth-largest municipality in Slovenia and the only city municipality in the region. It is also an economic powerhouse, home to some of Slovenia’s leading export-oriented companies, including Krka d.d., one of the region’s top pharmaceutical giants; Revoz d.d., the only car manufacturer in Slovenia; and Adria Mobil d.o.o., a renowned producer of motorhomes and caravans. Alongside these major firms, many innovative and forward-thinking companies contribute to the overall development of the region.

The town is not only economically strong, but it also offers plenty of opportunities to explore its rich cultural heritage, arts, and festivals, as well as its natural beauty.
